Volunteers needed for 'The Bicycle Ballet'

To be performed at the National Theatre in London, The Bicycle Ballet is billed as "Busby Berkeley on wheels" (and presumably without the water and nose-clips). The first show for the Watch This Space Festival 2007 at the National Theatre is The Bicycle Ballet and is, as you'd expect from the name, a ballet performed on bicycles. "The show has a core of cycling dancers, but we need lots of volunteer cyclists to make up the Chorus and (with less commitment) the Cycling Mass," said Watch the Space producer Angus MacKechnie. "The grand finale should contain around 100 cyclists. It plays four times over the first weekend of Watch This Space, as part of our cycling celebrations in the Square when the Tour de France comes to London." The Bicycle Ballet website has more details on how to volunteer.

Local dancer earns place in ballet school

York University wanted her and so did Ryerson, but Tara-Lee Vaillancourt has traded in those admission letters for a pair of ballet slippers.

The Bonfield resident was among more than 500 people from around the world who auditioned for one of 150 spots in Canada's National Ballet School in Toronto.

After a four-day audition, Vaillancourt was told she was accepted into the school's three-year program, which starts in September. Upon graduation she will earn a teaching degree in dance.

The 17-year-old Grade 12 student at Ecole secondaire catholique Algonquin will be following in the ballet slippers of some of the most famous names in ballet history - Karen Kain, Rex Harrington, Veronica Tennant and James Kudelka.

"It's certainly way different from the universities my friends are going to, but this is where my dedication is," Vaillancourt said following classes last week.

South Africa: Promising Nyawo Will Be Expecting to Win at Turffontein

BRIAN Nyawo is one of Gauteng's most promising apprentices and he will be disappointed if he leaves Turffontein tomorrow without a winner.

The youngster has three chances of success with Harem Dancer (fourth race), Paulatino (sixth) and Tap Tap (eighth) all capable of making it to the number one box.

Frederick dancer lands dream job

That was not the case for 19-year-old Frederick native Cara Cooper, who knew she wanted to be a dancer since age 6.

My dream job hasnt changed since I was little, she said.

Cooper will move to England on June 22 to join the English National Ballet Company, one of the most prestigious in the world.

Getting to this point has taken a lot of dedication and support.

Shes a heck of a hard worker, said Jonathan Leise, who calls himself a technical supporter of Longmonts Dance Dimensions, the studio in which Cooper grew up. She has a lot of passion and a lot of soul about her.

On average, Cooper spends six hours a day dancing, and even more on show days. She has trained on full scholarship at the EDGE Performing Arts Center in Los Angeles and the Academy of Colorado Ballet.
